The In's and Out's of a Casino

A casino is a facility or establishment that accommodates certain types of gambling activities. Because of high traffic, casinos are often placed near or in hotels, restaurants, shopping establishments, cruise ships, resorts and other vacation attractions to encourage longer stays. To draw in more people, some casinos are also known for hosting live entertainment events such as concerts, shows and sporting events.

Gambling is primarily done in casinos. Customers or players gamble by playing the slot machines or other games of chance like baccarat, craps and roulette and some games that involve skill like poker and blackjack. Games in casinos usually have odds that are mathematically determined to ensure that the house retains a long-term advantage or profit over its customers. This is basically how casinos are run and how they make their money.

Even though casinos bring in profit for a certain community, it also has its negative effects. Casinos can increase the number of pathological gamblers who either contribute little or none at all to society. A casino can also attract burglars who attempt to cheat and steal while playing the different games. This is not only limited to players but to employees of the casino as well. A casino can also generate higher bankruptcy rates, increase crime, increase suicide rates and spread gambling addiction. Because of this, gambling or going to casinos has also drawn in teenagers over the past few years.

Like any other business, casinos focus on the profit. However running a successful casino is an art in itself. Gambling in casinos involves high stakes, tempting people to cheat the system. This is why the focus on security in these establishments is very important. Security in casinos today involves high-tech or surveillance cameras that are operated by highly trained individuals who attempt to locate cheating done by the players or the casino's employees. Casino security systems involve both a physical security force and a specialized surveillance department. The physical security force patrols the casino floor ready to respond to calls for assistance and reports of suspicious or criminal activities. Usually they are dressed as regular customers or patrons as to not attract attention and alarm potential burglars. The specialized surveillance department is also known as the "eye in the sky". They operate the casino's closed circuit television system closely watching the players and employees in the effort to detect any misconduct or cheating. So beware, once in a casino, do not even attempt to cheat!

Let's face it, casinos and gambling can look very tempting and enticing but make sure you're ready to face the consequences and the possibilities of losing. Just remember in casinos you can't win 'em all.
